James just nodded his head forlornly and watched as the wagon moved past him to circle around before heading around the corner and back in the direction of the center of town. He walked out of sight of the schoolhouse then stopped to let the wagon disappear into the distance before walking back to Mrs. Lester’s home. When he got there he threw himself down on the bed in his room and covered his face with his hands.

“Good going James,” he berated himself. “You’re doing a great job of things.”
